FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WEATHERFORD, TX April 13, 2023 – On Thursday, Texas Family Project released a poll showing Texas Republicans have grave concerns about the prospect of legalizing casino gambling in Texas.
Voters acknowledge that gambling is highly addictive, reveal that most of them do not engage in the form of gambling that are currently illegal, and twice as many GOP voters believe that Democrats will benefit more from legalized Casino gambling than Republicans.
Since January, the Texas Capitol has been inundated with dozens of lobbyists pushing to bring casinos to Texas by passing legislation authored by State Rep. Charlie Geren (R-Fort Worth). However, the bill has failed to win the support of actual citizens. The Texas GOP passed a resolution in January opposing casino gambling and Texas Family Project and other groups have continued to oppose the practice.
Texas Family Project Policy Director Austin Griesinger issued the following statement:
“Casino lobbyists and special interests can say what they want, but Texas Republicans know the truth. 85 percent of Texas GOP voters agree that casino gambling is just as addictive as drugs or alcohol and twice as many GOP voters believe bringing casinos to Texas would benefit Democrats more than Republicans. In short, bringing casinos to Texas is a bad bet.”
Griesinger further added:
“We hear from the casino lobbyists that Texas is missing out on revenue from citizens who have to go out of state to gamble, yet our polling shows only 16 percent of Texas Republicans have done so in the past 12 months. The only thing Texas is ‘missing out on’ is the crime, corruption, and increased welfare costs that come with casino gambling.”
