President Trump made many promises to the American families in his speech following his swearing-in. The commander and chief promised to bring school choice from the federal level, protect the innocence of children, and end the genital mutilation of children. It’s safe to say - President Trump has delivered on his campaign promises.
Can the Texas legislature say the same? Families have been waiting for the legislature to accomplish these items for years and Trump accomplished them in his first few weeks.
The first executive order that was signed was labeled, “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation.” This executive order cuts off any and all federal funding for child genital mutilation surgeries. This includes funding for TRICARE for military families. In this order, there is also a provision to disallow “sanctuary states” to practice child abuse by taking away parents' rights if they are against these surgeries.
The Department of Health and Human Services will be writing on the best practices of how to deal with a child if they start showing these signs. HHS, even more importantly, will be providing protections for whistleblowers who expose child genital mutilation practices.
This next executive order has been a priority for Texas families. Just like the order to end child genital mutilation, we have now seen federal action before our state could get to it. President Trump is bringing school choice to the federal level. The Secretary of Education, within the next 60 days, will be issuing guidance regarding how a state can use Federal formula funds to support K-12 school choice initiatives. There will be discretionary grant programs set up in order to fund education freedom. Block grants sent to states can now be used to fund education freedom for low-income families. Military families will get funding from the Department of Defense to fund their school choice initiatives.
Beyond the funding this executive order will give, it sets a precedent for the rest of the nation to follow. This order points out that children are not testing up to standards in many categories and many government schools are failing their students. It also highlights the importance of competition in the education field to turn failing schools around.
The last executive order on this list which affects the family also relates to schools. Signed on the same day as the Education Freedom Order, this executive order is aimed to remove any conversations of gender ideology or DEI propaganda from government-run schools. If schools violate this, they will have their federal funding removed. This order will also establish a “1776 Commission.” This commission will be appointed by the president every two years. The intent of this commission is to establish patriotic education that accurately depicts the history of the United States.
President Trump is hard at work for American families. All of the pressure is now on the Texas legislature to pass the legislative priorities. We finally have a federal government that is working to make life better for families and we expect that same amount of effort from our legislators here at home. These executive orders were all massive steps to ensure the family unit is taken care of. Promises made, promises kept.
